Introduction

In the recent years, Nepal has made significant strides in expanding energy access across the country, particularly in remote and rural areas. The government’s strong commitment for the accelerated promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency; and collaborations with development partners have played important role in advancing Nepal’s sustainable energy goals.

The Government of Nepal’s joint initiatives and technical collaborations with the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union, as Team Europe have also been supporting diversified energy access to the people of Nepal.  At present, the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation (MoEWRI) is executing Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme – Green Recovery and Empowerment with Energy in Nepal (REEEP-GREEN) with support of GIZ and the European Union.

Programme Description

REEEP-GREEN is a technical cooperation project agreed between the Government of Nepal (GoN) and the Federal Republic of Germany. With support of GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and cofinanced by the European Union, REEEP-GREEN is executed by the MoEWRI and sets out to improve the preconditions for planning and implementation of measures for the promotion of renewable energies and the efficient use of energy in Nepal.

The main objective of REEEP-GREEN is to create the regulatory, institutional, and private-sector conditions for disseminating renewable energy and improving energy efficiency in Nepal. REEEP-GREEN uses a multi-level approach consisting of five areas:

1: Policy- Institutional and Regulatory Framework for Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) at National Level;

2: Institutional Frameworks for RE and EE at Subnational Levels;

3: Sustainable Market Development for RE;

4: Dissemination of Results in the field of RE and EE;

5: Energy Efficiency in Industries and Enterprises.

The programme builds on the achievements of earlier programmes - Nepal Energy Efficiency Programme (NEEP) and the Renewable Energy for Rural Areas (RERA) project, implemented under the partnership between GoN and GIZ Nepal.
